Leonardo knew that he himself was to blame for her suffering.
However, he was too weak to do anything. Now, all he could ever do was to
wait for his wounds to heal.
Lisa did not know what to do except pick grass and berries. Now that
winter had arrived, the crops and plants were all dead.
‘Oh, Leo...’ she gazed at her darling all the time, ‘Why?’ she sighed in
anguish.
Leonardo wept without a sound. He closed his eyes, just hoping his
tears would soon be dried.
For the first few days, they lived merely on the fish Leonardo had
hunted before the start of this tragedy. Due to the cold weather, the fish
was as cold as ice and as fishy as seawater. Leonardo’s injured stomach
could not digest the raw flesh, and he threw up constantly. Their cave
became acrid.
Little red spots were found all over Leonardo. His throat was swollen
and he had trouble swallowing. Every time he masticated, the movement of
his jaw would stretch his wounds. Every time the bits of food went down
his esophagus, it felt exactly like breaking his throat.
Shortly, food ran out.
Yet there was nothing to do.
‘Leo. Wake up! See? Fish! Fish,’ Lisa screamed happily.
Shocked, Leonardo murmured with his broken voice, ‘How?’
‘That doesn’t matter! All that matters is that we have food!’
Leonardo struggled to look up at his wife. He observed her carefully.
Lisa was as white as snow; her lips were purplish like an eggplant; and her
body was unconsciously shivering.
